A Letter from the Alaska Psychological Association
President Regarding Membership
Dear Colleagues:
I’m excited to be in the midst of my
first year as the President of the Alaska Psychological Association
(AK-PA). I want to thank Dave Wilcox and Ellen Cole (2
Past-Presidents), the Board, and all members for making AK-PA the
vibrant organization it is.
Please continue to support mental
health and psychology in Alaska by renewing your membership or joining
AK-PA today. I know the downturn in the economy has affected many of us
but AK-PA accomplished a lot in 2009 and your membership support is
critical to keeping this momentum going.
Highlights from 2009
-
Several AK-PA members held
key positions with APA.
-
Dr. Paul Craig,
long-time member and Past-President, served as the American
Psychological Association (APA) Treasurer.
-
Dr. Ellen Cole began her
service at President of APA’s Division 35, Society for
Psychology of Women.
-
Dr. David Sandberg served
as Representative to APA’s Committee of State Leaders.
-
With the passing of mental
health parity, AK-PA lobbied for support of several other key
legislative actions at the State Leadership Conference in March of
2009. Actions included the following:
-
Making psychologists
eligible for evaluation and management services.
-
Adding psychologists to the
Medicare “physician” definition.
-
Warding off a decrease in
Medicare payments.
-
Passing health reform to
integrate psychological services in primary care, preventative
services, and benefit packages.
-
Maryam Bassir, AK-PA’s
Diversity Delegate, was one of 7 delegates funded to attend the 2009
State Leadership Conference.
-
Ruddy Taylor, our APA
Graduate Student Representative, worked hard to increase student
membership and increased membership by 75%! A meet-and-greet
between the AK-PA board and psychology graduate students of UAA and
APU was held in October of 2009.
-
Several new members joined
the AK-PA Board of Directors. These include Lori Keim (new Executive
Director), Jaedon Avey (new APA Graduate Student Representative), and
Susan LaGrande (Disaster Response Coordinator).
-
Several Continuing
Education events were offered with an enthusiastic membership
response.
-
A Continuing Education
fair in the March featuring local experts.
-
Test-Based Assessment of
Malingering by Dr. Richard Fredrick in June.
-
Cultural and Cross-Cultural
Issues in Couples Therapy in August.
-
Psychology and Family Law
in November.
-
The website and listserv
continue to be active.
We have the progress of 2009 to
build on in 2010. So you know what 2010 holds, the strategic plan
includes 4 key areas of focus:
-
Increase community
engagement through community presentations about mental health.
-
Foster collaboration with
other mental health professionals and related organizations (e.g.,
the Alaska chapters of the National Association of Social Workers,
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, and the American Counseling
Association).
-
Increase engagement of
membership through more outreach to new graduates and licensees as
well as to existing members.
-
Upgrade to new
technologies such as videoconferencing to increase rural
participation.
Your membership is key to the
continued success of AK-PA so please turn in your renewal or membership
application today!
Sincerely,
Denise A.
Dillard, Ph.D.
